5th Sunday in Ordinary Time

FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Introduction
February 5, 2023

Good noon/afternoon brothers and sisters in Christ.

We are now in the 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time.

The first reading is taken from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah: We can hear the Prophet Isaiah reminding the people of the genuine meaning of fasting.

The second reading is taken from the First Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians. St. Paul reminded them that he teach and preach by the power of the Holy Spirit and not of man.

The gospel is taken from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. Jesus said, " your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father."

Let us all stand to begin the Eucharistic Celebration.

FIRST READING
Is. 58.7-10

Your light shall break forth like the dawn.

A reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah

Thus says the LORD:
Share your bread with the hungry, shelter the oppressed and the homeless; clothe the naked when you see them, and do not turn your back on your own.
Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your wound shall quickly be healed; your vindication shall go before you, and the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard.
Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer, you shall cry for help, and he will say: Here I am!
If you remove from your midst oppression, false accusation and malicious speech; if you bestow your bread on the hungry and satisfy the afflicted; then light shall rise for you in the darkness, and the gloom shall become for you like midday.

The word of the Lord.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM
Ps 112:4-5, 6-7, 8-9

R. (4a) The just man is a light in darkness to the upright.

Light shines through the darkness for the upright; he is gracious and merciful and just.
Well for the man who is gracious and lends, who conducts his affairs with justice.

R. The just man is a light in darkness to the upright.

He shall never be moved; the just one shall be in everlasting remembrance.
An evil report he shall not fear; his heart is firm, trusting in the LORD.

R. The just man is a light in darkness to the upright.

His heart is steadfast; he shall not fear.
Lavishly he gives to the poor; his justice shall endure forever; his horn shall be exalted in glory.

R. The just man is a light in darkness to the upright.

SECOND READING
1 Cor. 2:1-5

I have announced to you the mystery of Christ crucified.

A reading from the first Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians

Then I came to you, brothers and sisters, W proclaiming the mystery of God, I did not come with sublimity of words or of wisdom. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified.
I came to you in weakness and fear and much trembling, and my message and my proclamation were not with persuasive words of wisdom, but with a demonstration of Spirit and power, so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God.

The word of the Lord.

ALLELUIA
Jn 8:12

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
I am the light of the world, says the Lord; whoever follows me will have the light of life.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

GOSPEL
Mt. 5:13-16

You are the light of the world.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew

Jesus said to his disciples:
"You are the salt of the earth.
But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world.
A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.
Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house.
Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father."

The Gospel of the Lord.

Prayer of the Faithful
February 5, 2023

Priest: Being a real disciple of the Lord and an apostle is not easy, for we are expected to live the Gospel to the full. Aware of our weakness, let us offer our intentions to our Almighty God, we pray:
LORD, MAKE US SALT OF THE EARTH AND LIGHT OF THE WORLD.

1. That the Church leaders, especially Pope Francis, the Bishops and Priests, may receive a zealous heart to accomplish the mission entrusted to them by the Lord Jesus. Let us pray.

2. That the government leaders and members may live a life of an inspiration to the entire Christian community and serve the people with justice and fairness. Let us pray.

3. That all parents may blessed by God with the hearts who value the gift of children, and raise them with a sense of responsibility to be good Christians and honest citizens, let us pray.

4. That all pregnant women who are tempted to abort their child may be enlightened by the Holy Spirit and may receive the grace to mercy and love. Let us pray.

5. That those who offer their praises and thanksgiving to God especially ________ may continue to be the salt and light to the needy in the society. Let us pray.

6. That those who have died especially _______  may live eternally in heaven. Let us pray.

7. In silence, let us pray for our personal intentions. (Pause). Let us pray.

Priest: Lord Jesus, true light of the world, strengthen our determination to fulfill our task of being salt of the earth and light of the world. Sustain us in our endeavor to follow your example and overcome the moral darkness that is around us and within us. You who live and reign for ever and ever. Amen.
